IN THIS TOGETHER is an experimental documentary film that uses reenactment and a collaborative working method to explore work issues facing Uber cab drivers.

Along with three actors and three former Uber drivers, the project examines a conversation that took place between three Uber drivers and three Uber office workers amid ongoing protests at the Uber headquarters in Amsterdam. In the film, we see the actors and the drivers coming together to reenact this conversation and reflect on it.

Using the audio recording that was made during the conversation, a written-out film script and a conversation between the filmmaker and whistleblower Mark MacGann, the participating drivers and the actors meet in a staged Uber meeting room. What unravels is a confrontational and vulnerable gathering of Uber drivers and actors, all six trying to deal with the powerlessness with which the conversation is imbued for both parties.

In addition to the details experienced by precarious workers that are increasingly subject of public discussion, IN THIS TOGETHER shows the complex connection between precarious workers and the workers above them (the middle managers), who often still feel secure when it comes to income and job security. The material explores the togetherness of these two usually separate groups of workers and asks the question: what if we made an effort to dissolve this separation? Could there be solidarity between the two groups of working people?

IN THIS TOGETHER is een experimentele documentaire film waarin middels enscenering en een collaboratieve werkmethode de problematiek van Uber taxi chauffeurs wordt onderzocht.

Samen met drie acteurs en drie voormalige Uber chauffeurs wordt een gesprek onder de loep genomen dat plaatsvond tussen drie Uber chauffeurs en drie Uber kantoormedewerkers temidden van aanhoudende protesten van een groep taxichauffeurs bij het Uber hoofdkantoor in Amsterdam. In de film zien we het samenkomen van de acteurs en de chauffeurs voor het naspelen van en reflecteren op dit gesprek.

Aan de hand van de tijdens het gesprek gemaakte audio opname, een uitgeschreven filmscript en een gesprek tussen de filmmaker en klokkenluider Mark MacGann, ontmoeten de participerende chauffeurs en de acteurs elkaar in een geënsceneerde Uber vergaderruimte. Wat zich ontrafelt is een confronterend en kwetsbaar samenzijn van Uber chauffeurs en acteurs die alle zes proberen om te gaan met de onmacht waarmee het gesprek voor beide partijen is doordrenkt.

Behalve de details die precair werkenden ervaren en die steeds vaker onderwerp van gesprek zijn, toont IN THIS TOGETHER de complexe verbinding tussen precair werkenden en de werkenden boven hen (de middle managers), die zich vooralsnog vaak veilig wanen als het gaat om financiële beloning en werkzekerheid. Het materiaal onderzoekt het samenzijn van deze twee doorgaans gescheiden groepen werkenden en stelt de vraag: wat als we een poging doen om die scheiding op te heffen? Zou er solidariteit kunnen bestaan tussen de twee groepen werkenden?
